80年代の後期から現在に至るまで息の長い活動を続けるGuitar Gangsters。
Oi/Street Punkにカテコライズされる事の多い彼等ですが、
その音楽的背景は幅広く、レゲエやスカのリズムを用いた曲も時折見受けられます。
いずれのアルバムもクオリティーが高いモノで、どれから聴いてもイケると思いますが、
自分は2枚目と、7枚目のアルバムが気に入っていますですよ。
以下の音源以外では、V.A.｢Undergroud Rockers」(Link Recordsからの英国盤ではVol.1)に
「Thats When The Razor Cuts」と、「Everybody Wants To Be My Friend」のバージョン違いを収録しています。
また、V.A.「British Punkinvasion 3」では、「Get To Them (Before They Get To You)」、
「Just Do Nothing」、「Worst Bar In The World」 、「How Was I To Know」 、
「Underground Disaster」の5曲で参加。上記の5曲は、いずれも、このV.Aのみで聴ける物です。
ところで、2枚目のアルバムの4曲目に収録されている「Bad Bad Girl」は、
50年代から60年代の半ばにかけて活躍したシュレルズというグループの
「Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?」という曲に、とてもとても似ています。
ちなみに、「Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?」を作曲したのは、
あのキャロル・キングでして、後の自身の最高傑作「つづれおり」でセルフカバーもなされています。
また、シュレルズは、かのビートルズのお気に入りだったようで、
(ビートルズというより当時のリーダーだったジョン・レノンのお気に入りと言った方が正確か)
「Boys」や、「Baby It's You」などは、ビートルズの曲としての方が有名なんじゃないでしょうか。
さらに言うなれば、「Baby It's You」を作曲したのは、
20世紀最高の作曲家の1人と言われるバート・バカラックという人物なんですが、
この御仁はカーペンターズの「Close To You(邦題：遥かなる影)」も作曲してるんですね。
で、そのカーペンターズはビートルズというフィルターを通した上で
「Baby It's You」を演奏していたりする訳でして。そういうのって、何だか面白いですよねぇ。
最後に、上で記述したバート・バカラックに関しては我等がSnuffもカバーしております。
バカラックの長いキャリアでも特に初期の曲、「Magic Moments」。
Snuffがカバーした曲の出来の方についてはノーコメントにさせて下さい。
ひたすらにコンスタントな動きを見せる彼等は7枚目のアルバムに続いて、
ベスト盤をリリースし、さらに2009年には8枚目のアルバムをドロップ！
なんという驚異の現役ロングランバンド。
しかも、この8枚目のアルバム、すごく良いです。彼等のベストの1つかも。
