女性ボーカルに様々なスタイルを織り込んだ音楽性は、まさしくSofa Headの原型。
ハードコアの要素が大きいのにも関わらず、不思議と耳に馴染むメロディーは癖になります。
適度にチープでザラザラした音も二重丸。いやー、すげぇカッコイイ！
2005年末には、発表した音源の殆どをブチ込んだ有難すぎるディスコグラフィー盤、
「Thology」がBoss Tuneageからリリースされています。全64曲の凄まじい代物。
以下の音源の他には2つのテープでのリリースがあるようです。
その中には、どの音源にも収録されなかった曲も多数あるって事らしいです。
いや、そこまでディスコグラフィー盤に収録して欲しかったなんて言いませんけど。
その他に今回のディスコグラフィー盤に含まれなかったのは、
1st EP「Can You Dig It?」の再発盤に収録されていたライブトラック辺りでしょうか。
ライブ盤のLP「Kicking Ass At TJ'ｓ」の初回盤に付いてきたフレキシに収録されているのは、
メンバーの友達であったVic Reevesというコメディアンによるオールディーズ風味が溢れる曲。
イントロの安っぽい音で雷鳴が轟く辺りは「悲しき雨音」とかに通じる感じ。
「Thology」のライナーでSeanは、“高値で取引されてるけど、こんな物には目もくれるな。
たぶん君は、それを既に投げ捨てているだろう”なんて書いてますが、
確かに、何でこれをDanのLPにオマケとして封入したのかは大いに疑問です。
ともかく、Danの魅力は「Thology」で充分過ぎる程に堪能出来るので、
よほどマニアックな人でなければ、「Thology」をゲットするだけで大丈夫でありましょう。
で、その「Thology」なんですが、さすがに30曲以上も続けて聴くのはオススメできません。
やはり、元となった音源ごとに編集して聴くのがよろしいかと思います。
ちなみに、Disc1の1曲目から12曲が1st LP、13曲目から22曲目が2nd LP、
23曲目から26曲目が今回に初めて日の目を見たPeel Sessionからで、
27曲目から30曲目が彼等のデビュー音源であるEPに収録されていた物です。
Disc2は、1曲目から16曲目がオリジナルとしてはラスト音源となった3rd LP、
17曲目から34曲目がライブの様子を収めたLPからとなっています。
Danの解散後、IanはSofa Headに、SeanはWat Tylerに参加しました。
あー、SeanがWat Tylerに参加したのは、Danが活動を続けていた途中からかも。
それから、Danのメンバーの1人に名を連ねているJulieってのは、
Wat TylerやEggplantに参加したJulieの事でしょうね、きっと。
また、初期のメンバーが安定しない頃、ライブをする際にドラマーがいない時には
当時はDickieと共にH.D.Q.に参加していたLaineyにヘルプを頼んでいたとか。
インナーの記述を見ると、結局、ずっとメンバーは安定しなかったみたいですけど。
Laineyは、その後にLeatherface、そしてSofa Head、Rugratにも参加。
さらに、IanとSeanの両者は、共にMeantimeとRugger Buggerという、
後のUKメロディックを支える事となるレーベルを運営。
そのシーンの根底はDanから始まったなんて言葉も大袈裟にはならないと思います。
